WILLISTON FIRE DEPARTMENT
The Williston Fire Department (WFD) utilizes a key safe box system (also known as a “Knox-Box®” or “lock box”) to provide rapid entry to your property during an emergency.  The key safe box system is a secure program specifically developed for fire departments nationwide. With one master key available only to the fire department, we can gain access to any structure, outbuilding, residence, gate, etc. that has one of our key safe boxes installed.  There are several benefits to having a key safe box, including:
  • It can reduce response time, which is critical during a fire or medical emergency.
  • It can eliminate waiting for a property owner to unlock the door at any given hour.
  • It can eliminate the need to force windows or doors open to gain entry.
  • It can provide security for sick, disabled or injured individuals who may not be able to answer the door.
  • It can reduce liability for lost keys.

Per the 2013 Town Plan Review Standards Policy:  Key safe lock boxes are required for all commercial and industrial buildings, or occupancies, per NFPA 1.  Commercial or multi-family residential buildings with one main entry should consider an exterior key safe box & interior key cabinet combination (see below for more information).  Larger buildings such as commercial warehouses, large frame box stores, and multi-use occupancies with multiple entries may require multiple lock boxes.  Commercial buildings with loading docks will be required to have multiple lock boxes.

Property owners can store master entrance keys, access cards, contact information, and floor plans in an exterior secure tamper-proof key safe box.  Keys to maintenance, storage, attic access, and other areas that are normally locked should also be provided.   Residences who have pin pad access through a door, garage or gate should include the PIN number in the box.

HOW DOES THE KEY SAFE BOX PROGRAM WORK?

  • The Williston Fire Department purchases Kidde key safe boxes directly from the manufacturer.
  • The box face plate is keyed to our master key, which only the fire department has access to.
  • Boxes are sold at the station to Williston building owners, who install the box on their building, residence, gate, etc.  Tenants who wish to have a key safe box will need to contact the building owner and request they initiate the process (or provide written approval) to have a box installed.
  • Once the box is installed, the owner brings the building’s master door key, contact card, etc. to the fire station (or calls to schedule a time to meet us on location).
  • We then take the master key and other contents, place them in the box, and install the face plate.
  • In an emergency, we open and use the contents of the box to gain access to the building, contact the owner, etc.
  • The owner is asked to update their box contents with us any time there’s a change, or at least semi-annually (i.e. at daylight savings time) to ensure keys, contact cards, etc. are current.

HOW DO I PURCHASE A KEY SAFE BOX?

Step 1:  Fill Out the Paperwork
At the bottom of this page, please download and complete the forms you will need.  Forms can also be picked up at the station.  Please bring these forms with you to the station when you pick up your box:

  • Key Safe Box Information Form
  • Key Safe Box & Sign Order Form
  • Key Safe Box Contact Card Form

Step 2:  Pay for Your Item(s)
You can pay for your purchase with:
  •  Debit or credit card.  Click the ONLINE PAYMENTS tab at the top of this page.  Please print your receipt and bring it with you when you pick up your box.
  • Cash or check at the station.  Please make checks payable to Williston Fire Department.

Note:  Paying online does not "order" your box - you still need to bring your order form and other paperwork with you to the station.

Step 3:  Pick Up Your Item(s) at the Station

Bring your paperwork and receipt (or cash/check) to the Williston Fire Department.
We keep the face plate while you install your box.  All mounting hardware is included with the box.
Let us know when your box is installed.

     KEY CABINETS:
For owners with numerous keys to their building, we also offer a key cabinet option.  You would install a SupraSafe 1 commercial key safe box outside of your main entrance, which would hold the master entrance key and the key (or combination) to your key  cabinet.  The key cabinet would be then installed inside your building at the main entry where your exterior key safe box is installed.  The cabinet would hold all of the keys to your building.

We have these two key cabinets available for purchase at the station:
  • Key Guard 48-hook Key Cabinet        $54.00   {Note: prices are subject to market}
This key cabinet has 48 hooks (tags included) and is equipped with both a master key lock and a combination lock.

  • Honeywell 24-Hook Key Cabinet      $22.00   {Note: prices are subject to market}
This key cabinet is smaller with 24 hooks (tags included) and is equipped with a master key lock.

You do not have to get a key cabinet from us, so feel free to shop around for one that suits your needs.  Just remember to provide us with a key (or combination) once it is installed.  Should you get an entry key cabinet like the ones above, you will want to install it in a highly visible place just inside the entry where your exterior key safe box is located.  We would be happy to come over and provide suggestions on placement, if you wish.

HOW DO I INSTALL MY KEY SAFE BOX?

Your key safe box should be installed as follows:
  •  At the main entry door, on the same side as the door handle (not on the hinged side).
  • Approximately five feet (5’ or chest height) off the ground above a solid surface (i.e. concrete, pavement, a porch, etc.).
  • With a six inch (6”) reflective tape border surrounding the box.
  • Readily visible and accessible to emergency responders.
  • If the keys are for a gate or other type of access, the box should be mounted on the gate or on a sturdy post near the entry.

Your key cabinet should be installed as follows:
  • Inside your building at the main entry door where your exterior key safe box is installed, in a highly visible place.
  • Approximately five feet (5’ or chest height) off the ground above a solid surface with no obstructions.
  • Readily visible and accessible to emergency responders.

Any other location requires prior approval by the Fire Chief or his/her designee.  If you need assistance installing your box or key cabinet, we can help with that at no charge.

WHAT DO I DO ONCE MY KEY SAFE BOX IS INSTALLED?

Once installed, the building owner can either bring the master key(s), and other items you want in the box, to the WFD station, or call us to meet you at your location.    The key safe box must contain master keys for every entry door, locked maintenance doors, access cards (if applicable), and contact information for building representatives.

CAN I PURCHASE REFLECTIVE GAS AND SPRINKLER (G&S) SIGNS FROM THE FIRE DEPARTMENT?

Yes!  They are included on our order form and can be ordered and paid for the same as key safe boxes above.

Building signs notify Fire Department personnel that the building is serviced by natural gas and/or a sprinkler system.  This is very important safety information, as additional steps are required for these systems (i.e. notify the utility company, shut-off valves, etc.).

  • Green Reflective Gas (“G”) Building Sign:  $15.00
Green reflective gas (“G”) signs are installed on the exterior of a building, above the utility inlet to the building.

  • Red Reflective Sprinkler (“S”) Building Sign:  $15.00
Red sprinkler (“S”) signs are installed on the exterior of a building, above the sprinkler system inlet to the building.

  • “1 of 2” and “2 of 2” Building Sign Set:  $30.00
For buildings with multiple gas or sprinkler inlets into the buildings.

Please give us a call at (802) 878-5622 if you have any questions.
